Chapter Nine

Slade

“Brixton,” Aidan answers the phone curtly, and an inaudible voice murmurs something into his ear. “Wait, who’s this?” his voice rises.

I look up. It’s rare for Aidan to sound confused about anything. He’s usually the master of control, everything meticulously planned out and all potential scenarios accounted for. We’re similar in that way, but it’s for different reasons and it manifests itself differently. As in, he’s a hero and a leader, and I’m a surly asshole.

A shadow passes across Aidan’s face. “She what? Oh, Jesus fucking Christ. Are you sure?”

There’s a loud garbled voice on the other end of the line that I can hear from across the table, although I can’t make out their actual words. Someone isn’t happy. And I’m pretty sure there’s only one ‘she’ that whoever it is could be referring to.

“Look, sorry to hear that, dude. Seriously. I know we have our differences but.. Jesus. Look, I’ll deal with it. I’ll be back in touch. Okay, bye.”

His face is stony as he hangs up.

“What did she do? It was her, wasn’t it? The fucking she-devil has fucked something up just by being alive.” I knew it wouldn’t take long for her to do something to compromise us. I don’t know what she’s done, but she’s clearly done something. I’m going to enjoy being right about this.

Aidan sighs and runs a hand through his hair. “Yep, you were right. I should have listened to you instead of Roman’s dick. Jesus.”

“Well, what did she do? It would be helpful to know the details so I can help you think through what to do next.”

“She fucking told that Devon girl about us helping her guys pay off her father’s debt. That we’re responsible for saving her. She didn’t know.”

“Wait what? She hates Devon, and from what I could tell, it’s mutual. And they don’t even really know each other. How the fuck did that even happen? Did she track her down on purpose to upset her?”

“I don’t know. But either way, I guess those guys had told her a different story, and she’s on a rampage, possibly murderous. If I were them, I’d be protecting my dick from sharp objects right now.”

“When did they even have an opportunity to communicate? She was only out of the house for a couple of hours this entire time.”

“I guess they were both at the mall at the same time.”

I let out a low whistle. “What are the fucking chances? But then again, I knew we shouldn’t have taken the risk, and should have just sent Brick to get more stuff.”

Aidan sighs. “Look, can we focus on how to fix this rather than pointing fingers and talking about how you were right over and over again? It’s not helpful.”

“Yeah, fine,” I sigh. “But Jesus. I knew she was trouble the moment I saw her.”

“It is kind of on them, though, when you think about it.” Aidan shrugs.

“Why are you protecting her? She did a cruel thing for whatever reason. Maybe she’s fucked in the head like that.
